The take up lever is the part that usually breaks during a sewing machine transportation if the machine isn't properly packed.
Without it the machine wont function so it will need replacing.
It's not an easy task and quite possibly will give you a hard time because it involves unscrewing many screws that may be sitting there untouched since they were tightened by SINGER 80-90 years ago in the factory and chances are, one of them (or more) will be stuck and unwilling to be unscrewed.
Lubricating them with very thin oil most (but not all) of the times will help.
