Public Speaking Tips to Avoid Filler Words
How do you avoid those pesky non-words? Ah... Um... Ya Know... People become obsessed with trying to get rid of them. I'm going to tell you right now, the more you focus on them, the more you'll say them. Here's what I want you to do:
1. Really focus on your eye contact. When you look at individuals, your propensity to have an "um" or an "ah" will be dramatically reduced.
2. As your moving from one side of the room to the other, stop talking. Just take a breath. While you're silent, think about what you want to say next.
3. Walk back to the screen. While you're walking back, take a breath. Don't talk. When you get back to the screen, turn around, make eye contact with an individual and resume speaking.
All of these are opportunities for you to take your time, take a breath, think about what you want to say, and you will be able to reduce those non-words.
