In 1932, the United States government enrolled 399 Black men in Macon County, Alabama into the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. They told these men they were being treated for bad blood. They were never treated. They were injected, monitored, and left to die — all while the government took notes.
By 1947, penicillin was a confirmed cure for syphilis. The U.S. government knew this and withheld it from every single man in the study for 25 more years. Wives were infected. Children were born with the disease. 28 men died directly from syphilis. Over 100 more died from complications.
