MaD Tutorials: Testing for Mad Unicorn Disease
How do you calculate the probability of having a disease, if you test positive? Its not unusual for some medical tests to return a 'positive' result in people that don't have the disease being tested (aka false positives). This obviously makes these tests less accurate.
The test for Mad Unicorn Disease (MUD) is unfortunately one of those tests. In this abbreviated past exam question for first year Maths, Natalie Bayfield (revising for said exams) attempts to calculate the probability of having Mad Unicorn Disease, if you tested positive.
Everyone knows however that prevention is the best medicine. So just for the moment we recommend you don't hang out with Unicorns, people who have been in contact with Unicorns or anyone infected with Mad Unicorn Disease. Which, frankly, could be anyone.
