BACKSTORY: Tal, or more formally Counselor Talen’shia, was part of the city of Enell’s governing body known as the Council. The city’s Queen had her subjects elect Counselors to help her make decisions about their home. However, a neighboring city’s monarch took this as a sign of weakness and takes control of the city, killing the queen and most of the Council. Tal escaped with a broken back leg and fled deep into the city. She began to organize a small group in order to kill and put the city back into its rightful talons: those of a Queen and her elected Council. Problem is, she’ll do about anything to get there…
EXCERPT:
The best way to get to know a city was through its alleyways.
O, all the tour guides will say otherwise, but then again, their job was to present a flawless landscape of buildings and towers and architectural marvels. Alleys don’t usually fit that description.
So if you see a tourist in the sidestreets of the city of Enell, they’re either incredibly perceptive,
or hopelessly lost.
The latter is usually the case.
Those were the thoughts of a deep brown dragoness as she strutted down one of said alleyways with no small amount of swagger. The early summer air around her lay heavy and dead in the narrow space, barely moving as she swished forwards. As she neared the end of the pass to a main street, the sounds of a city in the morning drifted towards her, growing louder with every step.
The dragoness poked her head out into the bright sunlight before fully slipping around the corner and into the road. It was packed full of dragons; each kept their wings folded closely to their sides, not that it did much in terms of making the street less crowded. In the bustle, scales brushed scales and wings and tails collided with dull thwacks.
She navigated the crowd with ease, her years of doing so plainly visible in every step she took. Every movement of her lithe but well-built body had a purpose. Her lightly striped scales and cream-colored horns gleamed, while her vibrant green eyes darted around, searching for…
There. A flash of silver-blue scales on the side of the road was all it took to recognize her. The dragoness hurried over, weaving and dodging through the masses around her like a seal in a harbor. She greeted the new dragoness beside her with a smirk and a friendly brush of the wing.
“Tal,” she grinned.
The silver dragoness turned and gave her a well-worn but sincere smile.
“Good morning to you too, Rowan.” Her voice was eerily smooth and gave you the vague sensation that you were trying to grip fresh ice with numb talons; simply impossible to quite grasp.
“Off to a meeting?” Questioned Rowan. Her voice carried a moderate Enellian accent that caused her to drop her ‘r’s and stretch out her ‘a’s, as well as cut off the end of ‘ing’. It was common enough, an Enellian accent in the city of Enell, but was still distinctive.
“That's my job, now isn't it?” Replied Tal, gazing out into the sea of bodies around them. “Being a Counselor generally entitles attending Councils,” she ends, tilting her head at Rowan.
“I suppose,” Sighed the brown dragon. “How about you swing by the restaurant afterwards and we can kvetch about how arrogant your fellow Counselors can be?”
It was Tal’s turn to grin. “That sounds… wonderful.” She put in her most official and pretentious voice at the end for effect. They both snorted with laughter.
Rowan squinted at a nearby tower at a clock.
“I've gotta run, restaurant opens in ten!” She called over her shoulder as she turned back into the crowd.
“See you then!” Shouted Tal over the din, before stretching out her wings (leading to some protests from the dragons around her), pulling herself into the air, and gliding to the center of the city.
