Dr. Dre and Unknown - Scratchin' 100 Speakers Headphone Version
This is a hot one! Dr. Dre's 1st solo vinyl cut released in 1984. Scratchin' 100 Speakers is one of the first West Coast electro jams. Complex DMX programming by David Storrs layered with Dr. Dre attacking Fab 5 Freddy's Change The Beat with fury.
I first heard this played on air by BBC radio DJ John Peel. It sat on a compilation tape for years until copies started appearing at record fairs in the pre-internet days. Been a favourite electro of mine for 39 years and it feels like it's taken about that long to restore it!
This was a tough audio to try and clean-up. This Saturn pressing is shaky in places where it sounds like the reverb added to the mix has not translated too well during the cutting / pressing process. The bass kick is close to being distorted and the mid-range is harsh at times. On top of that, there is cue burn and fader static audible from Dre's turntable antics which we've left in to maintain authenticity.
This is not a perfect clean-up by a long shot, but in the absence of any studio / digital remastered versions available anywhere as of 2023, it's better than nowt!
