In the fifth battle of the race circuits we have a battle between the Zandvoort, the winner of last month, and Brands Hatch.

Zandvoort is a permanent race track in a seaside resort in the Netherlands, not far from the capital Amsterdam. It opened in 1948 as a twisty but very fast race track. The track contained a lot of fast sweeping corners with the famous Tarzan Corner as the ultimate overtaking point. Still today this corner is famous for it’s spectacular overtaking moves.
Through the years the layout of Zandvoort changed several times. First chicanes were added to the layout, to make it safer for Formula 1. But in the 1980’s the municipal of Zandvoort - owner of the circuit ground - sold a part of the circuit to a group of investors who wanted to build a holiday resort on the site.
To keep the circuit operational a 2.5 kilometer interim circuit was built in 1989. In 1999 the track was extended and made usage of a section of the original layout, which was left abandoned in the 1990’s. About half of the current Zandvoort circuit still consists of the original layout from 1948.
In 2021 Formula 1 returned back to Zandvoort after 35 years of absence. For this ocasion they changed two corners into high banked corners. Something unique for a modern Formula 1 track!
However it lost about 50% of it’s original layout, Zandvoort is still a loved circuit by drivers and public, because of it’s fast corners and elevation changes. Especially the fast section with the Scheivlak Corner is very popular.
Brands Hatch is a permanent race track in the United Kingdom, not far from the capital London. And that's not the only thing it has in common with Zandvoort. Both circuits follow the natural lines through the landscape.
Brands Hatch started actually as a grasstrack motorcycle circuit on farmland that belongs to Brands Farm. With permission of the land owner the site was used for practising and time trials by a Group of cyclists. The First actually race was held in 1926, between cyclists and cross-country runners.
Within a few years, motorcyclists were using the circuit, laying out a three-quarter-mile anti-clockwise track in the valley. That was the beginning of Brands Hatch as a motor racing circuit.
Through the years the track was extended and the driving direction changed from anti-clockwise to clockwise.
From 1964 to 1986, the Brands Hatch Circuit hosted the British Grand Prix 12 times. Today, the circuit host races for the British Touring Car Championship, GT Series, Sprint Cup, NASCAR Euro Series, Formula 3, Superbikes, Truck Racing and the DTM.
Both Zandvoort and Brands Hatch both have a challenging layout with fast corners and elevation changes.
Brands Hatch has Paddock Hill Bend, Druids and the fast Hawtorn Bend. Zandvoort has the famous Tarzan Corner and the exciting fast run to the Scheivlak Corner. And it now also has two high banked corners.
