Exploring Suriname Motorsport Park 2024: Drag Strip Action!
In this vlog, we dive into Suriname Motorsport Park (SMP), Suriname's first and only official race track. Situated in the Para district, SMP has been at the heart of the country's motorsport scene since its opening in May 2013. While the track shows some wear, it remains operational and continues to host drag racing events, its primary focus. SMP plays a crucial role in promoting safe, legal racing. Before the track’s construction, illegal street racing was a growing problem in Suriname, putting racers and the public at risk. The creation of SMP, with its 1-kilometer-long and 18-meter-wide track, provided a safe and dedicated space for racing fans to indulge their passion without endangering others.
The History of Suriname Motorsport Park (SMP)
SMP's story begins with Motosur, the ‘Foundation for the Promotion of Motorsport in Suriname,’ established on November 2, 2006. For years, motorsport events were scattered across various locations in Suriname due to the lack of a permanent race track. In 2010, Motosur joined a working group for the Promotion of Motorsport in Suriname, led by Minister Santokhi of Justice and Police, who sought to combat illegal street racing by providing a dedicated racing venue.
In May 2013, Motosur’s efforts culminated in the opening of the Suriname Motorsport Park in Para, a major milestone for local motorsport. Initially, there were plans to expand the number of tracks in Suriname to seven, but unfortunately, those plans have not yet materialized. Nonetheless, SMP remains the central hub for drag racing and motorsport events in the country.
Suriname Motorsport Park Today
Though some parts of the park may seem neglected, SMP continues to serve as the main venue for drag racing events in Suriname. The 1-kilometer drag strip, with its 18-meter width, allows racers to push their limits in exciting, high-speed competitions. Both racers and fans come from across the region to experience the action at SMP.

Motosur: Promoting Motorsport in Suriname
Motosur continues to be the driving force behind the Suriname Motorsport Park. Since its establishment in 2006, the organization has been dedicated to promoting motorsport safety and supporting the growth of the racing community in Suriname. The creation of SMP provided a legal and safe venue for racing, addressing the dangers of illegal street races. Although Motosur originally planned to build multiple tracks, SMP remains the only official race track in the country.
Despite the track's need for some improvements, Motosur remains committed to fostering the local racing scene and organizing events at SMP. These events continue to draw racing enthusiasts and contribute to the development of motorsport in Suriname.
The Importance of Suriname Motorsport Park
Suriname Motorsport Park is more than just a racetrack; it's a symbol of the country's passion for motorsport. Before its construction, racers had no dedicated venue and were often forced to race illegally on public roads. The opening of SMP provided a much-needed solution, giving the motorsport community a place to gather, race safely, and share their enthusiasm for the sport. SMP also plays a vital role in reducing the risks associated with illegal street racing, creating a safer environment for both racers and the general public.
