Okay, so the EPA audit. As you know, my dad and I run a construction company together. We do remodeling and similar projects. A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from the EPA saying we were getting audited for lead safety. I wasn’t too concerned about it because I handle all the lead testing, and we’re really diligent about taking care of our paperwork.
But I forwarded the email to my dad, and he couldn’t sleep that night. He was so nervous, and I felt bad about it—he's even kind of sick now. I think he was really stressing out. It’s a big deal when you get audited by the EPA because if they find that you’re not in compliance, they can fine you hundreds of thousands of dollars. And you never know who you’re going to be dealing with. Will it be a nice person or someone who’s not so nice?
My dad was trying to research these audits, but he couldn’t find much information. So, I thought I would share my experience and some things I learned from talking to the auditor to help prepare others. Hopefully, it can ease some minds if they’re going through an audit.
It doesn’t have to be a huge deal, but you’re going to want to follow some specific guidelines.
