Paul Golz in Normandy for the 70th Anniversary
Paul had the good fortune of crossing the Atlantic to New York City on the Queen Mary in June of 1944. He was one of the lucky 425,000 German prisoners of war taken to the United States, ending up in Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia.
Paul was a green recruit who had been sick enough to avoid the Eastern Front and instead ended up in Normandy. He was captured in Cauquigny, five miles west of St. Mere Eglise, on June 9th, 1944.
Though a farm boy from Pomerania, he enjoyed a career in the German Foreign Service—because of the English he learned in American and Scottish prisoner of war camps.
