Upgrading the Porsche Boxster’s Audio System
Upgrading the audio system of a high-performance vehicle like the Porsche Boxster requires precision, expertise, and a deep understanding of both the car’s existing systems and the latest in audio technology. At B&B Audioconcepts, Cardiff's leading audio specialists, we thrive on challenges. Recently, we had the opportunity to overhaul the sound and multimedia experience in a Porsche Boxster by integrating the Kenwood DMX8021DAB, a state-of-the-art digital media AV receiver with Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and DAB+ radio.
Replacing the Porsche Boxster’s PCM
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is the factory-installed multimedia unit found in many Porsches, including the Boxster. While it serves its purpose, many Porsche owners are now looking for something more advanced, particularly a system that offers seamless smartphone integration, enhanced audio quality, and additional features like digital radio.
When the owner of this Porsche Boxster approached us, they had one specific request: to replace the outdated PCM with a modern touchscreen head unit that supports Apple CarPlay. They were particularly interested in the Kenwood DMX8021DAB, known for its high-quality 7.0" WVGA display, wireless smartphone connectivity, and comprehensive media capabilities.
However, replacing the PCM isn't as simple as swapping out one unit for another. The PCM is integrated into various vehicle systems, including the factory-installed parking sensors. Therefore, our task was to not only install the new Kenwood unit but also ensure that the parking sensors remained fully functional and were integrated into the new system's display.
