PPP June 2019 | Spotted Lanternfly
Guest speaker Whitney Swink joins us this month to talk about the spotted lanternfly. First found in eastern Pennsylvania in 2014, spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a new invasive insect pest that has now spread to New York, Delaware, and Virginia. While it has not yet been found in North Carolina, it is believed to be heading our way and early detection will be critical in stopping its spread and the devastating effect it could have on homes landscapes, businesses, and agricultural crops, particularly grapevines, fruit trees, and a wide range of hardwood trees. Whitney Swink, Regulatory Entomologist, Joy Goforth, Plant Pest Administrator, and Allison Ballantyne, Gypsy Moth Program Manager, NCDA & CS, Plant Industry Division, join us to share information about this pest, including where it is currently found and how to identify all stages of its life cycle. In addition, Mike Munster, Plant Disease Diagnostician with the NC State Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, will share updates on current plant disease issues found in North Carolina.
