September. Volga. Asp. Fishing in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Volga, the village of Memory of the Paris Commune. We arrived overnight to fish for three or four hours in the evening and from morning until lunch the next day. We planned to check out some well-known snags, so we brought a box of silicone lures, several dozen different foam lures, a couple of kilograms of lead cheburkas, and drop-shot rigs. In the end, we only had a small box of asp spinners. We never got around to jigging, as we encountered a cauldron of asp on the way to the snags on the first day. Who would resist the chance to catch a cauldron of asp?! Certainly not us. We managed to catch a couple of fish, and the cauldron ran out, and the bites stopped. Besides, fellow anglers, fishing almost directly along the cast, "helped" us out. We spent an hour cruising around the waters in search of new pockets and returned to the first location. During this time, the asp calmed down and returned to the surface to feed, signaling their presence with lively splashes and delighting us with bold bites. Naturally, we returned to this location the next morning, but a boat was already at our spot, and the splashes were nowhere to be seen. We set out to search. We found a new pocket on a riffle a kilometer upstream. This one soon disintegrated, but another one flared up in a different spot. So we had to cruising around the waters in search of active asp, and this strategy paid off.
