here's my cover of delkash and viguen's persian classic, "bordi az yadam"
a little backstory:
my cousin Sheyda died when she was 14, and I was 11. She collapsed at school and her heart stopped. She was one of my best friends. My parents, aunt and I drove four hours from Michigan to Ontario in almost complete silence. I didn’t know what was going on. Then I found out, and cried in a McDonald’s bathroom. When we got to their apartment, her mom asked me where she went. My head in her chest as she sobbed, her white t-shirt soaked from sweat and tears. “Bordi Az Yadam” was one of Sheyda’s favorite songs and her mom played it over and over again in the apartment following her departure. After the funeral, I would listen to this song obsessively and eventually learned all the words.
For years, I couldn’t listen to it anymore because I didn’t want to revisit the pain. Then a few months ago, it played on shuffle and I decided to cover it, as it’s one of the only Persian songs I knew most of the words to (and I still managed to mispronounce something on this recorded version lmao). I didn’t remember until after the release that she was the reason why I knew all the words. So Sheyda, this is for you. I love you, I miss you and I carry you with me always. Lyric video out now, with a little piece of Sheyda at the very end.
