While many war movies have focused on the ground combat that the army will provide, or even the air battles which can be seen from the air force, there is another notable division of the military which also deserves its share of love on screen. And that is the one which takes things out on to the water in the form of naval war movies.
Yes, whenever war stretches out to sea, it adds a whole other layer of danger to the proceedings as now not only do our protagonists have to deal with the threat of being shot at or bombed, they also have to deal with the existential terror of the deep waiting right below them. And this is something which has been shown perfectly in movies like 2003’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 1970’s Tora! Tora! Tora!, and 1954’s classic The Caine Mutiny.
But it’s not always above the surface of the water where naval war movies take place. No, some actually go down below as we see what life can be like inside the cramped quarters of a submarine, with this being an even scarier place to be when the battle is raging.
