Mountainside’s story is not just one story, but many: of how we started from a small idea between two friends and have grown to be an award-winning institution across the Northeast. It is the story of how a dedicated group of people, who we are very proud to call our team, has joined together each day to provide best-in-class care for our valued clients. And it is the story of the many lives that we have had the honor to fill with hope and healing, to help transform from darkness and isolation to light, laughter and love.
In 1998, two friends had an unconventional idea: extend addiction treatment beyond the confines of counseling rooms and the Big Book, to the outdoors. Get people moving, interacting with nature and one another. These organic opportunities for people to reconnect and engage with the world—to get out of their heads and experience the moment—lifted spirits and shifted mindsets, igniting a commitment to change. These experiential opportunities are what form the bedrock of our holistic wellness programming, bringing to life and reinforcing lessons learned through our expert clinical care.
From day one, Mountainside’s spirit has been to do whatever it takes to help each person that walks through our doors with whatever they need. With this mentality, we have grown from just one program to a full continuum of care, from just one location in Canaan, CT to multiple locations. And now, we are also accessible across the country virtually. Our offerings have expanded from clinical and wellness services to include family counseling, continuing care, alumni support, medical and psychiatric services, and medication-assisted treatment.
At Mountainside, our team is the lifeblood of our organization. We are warm and compassionate people who have a genuine desire to help others. For each and every client we serve, we unite to provide our “loved one standard of care”—to show the same level of respect, compassion, and professionalism we would want for our very own loved ones. We form a community of people who strive every day to not only be, but also give, our very best—in the guidance provided in therapy, in exam rooms and yoga studios, and on hikes up the mountain, on each call received from families seeking help, in the daily meals lovingly prepared, and in the care invested to make our spaces welcoming and conducive to healing.
In the past 25 years, our mission was never simply to just help people stop using harmful substances. We have always endeavored for more—to help people believe that a better, happier, and healthier life is within reach. We are proud to have been partners to over 20,000 alumni in getting their lives back in control and on track toward their personal goals, whether it be returning to school, finding a job, getting married, buying a home, or starting a family. Most of all, we are proud to have helped so many people regain self-worth, self-confidence, and self-love, to truly feel and become whole again.
