Should Anti-Zionist Jews Celebrate Hanukkah?
These days, we're taught that the murderous Maccabees are the heroes of the Hanukkah story. And, far too often, that the IDF are painted as their descendents. After over 100 days of massacres, it's obvious that is nothing heroic about this army. And, the farther you look into the history, there's really nothing heroic about their ancient role models either.
So how did we as Jews come to celebrate the Maccabees on Hanukkah? Well, until the rise of political Zionism....we really didn't. Let's journey through a few thousand years of history to see how this story, like so much of Jewish history, has been twisted to justify a genocidal end.
