7 Steps to Jumpstart Paying Off Debt

✅I set a goal in January of this year to be free by the end of the year and I did it! $70,000 paid off in 12 months.
I remember 5 years ago on maybe the second or third date my girlfriend and I went on. This day stands out to me because this was the day I started to change my relationship with money and how I handled it.
We were grabbing a cheap meal after work, and instead of me just saying no I didn’t have any money, I said sure. I have less than $10 to my name, and I had my fingers crossed she would offer to cover her own dinner. She paid for her dinner and I ordered, but I didn’t pay. I got my order total and pretended like I forgot my wallet but in reality, I had to go to my car and transfer $5 from my savings account to go with the $4 and some change in my checking account.
That day it really hit me that I needed to get things together and I could no longer live paycheck to paycheck.
I was disappointed in myself but mostly embarrassed at myself. I had a decent paying job that actually encouraged and educated us on how to handle money. From that day on, I told myself and I would never be that broke again in my life.

I’m pretty sure there are other moments but that really stuck out to me, so thank you, Mel. I joke with her now if she could have read a description of me financially she would have run the other way. Less thank $10 in my account and over $114K of debt at the time. Not that she is materialistic, or all about money. She does pretty well for herself and has been debt free for years now. The truth is if she would have run the other way, I wouldn’t have been mad, I honestly know I would have done the same thing. It takes a lot of commitment to take on someone else’s debt, and she was 100% on board when I told her I wanted to pay everything off.
