"Monday Mourning" was performed May 26th 2021. As a singer-songwriter student at The Interlochen Arts Academy, I had an assignment this semester to write about a current issue. Gun violence and school shootings have always troubled me, so I decided to write on the topic of these violent tragedies. "Monday Mourning" is the song I wrote for that assignment this semester.
Song Lyrics:
Over the phone
I can hear them hold their breath
As silence fills the halls
Echos of gunshots in their heads
And that’s their life
In the hands of a stranger
Their life
And their hearts beat fainter
These Monday mornings left in mourning
Cuts on the arm
from all the hurt we say
Gun to the head
She’ll do anything to take the numbness away
That’s her life
In the soul of a stranger
Her life
And her heart beats fainter
These Monday mornings left in mourning
A careful facade
Hiding internal strife
Just a trigger away
From showing the pain that he’s felt all his life
BRIDGE
and he’s firing his anger and rage
with the bullets that fly past our faces,
past our conscience
and our constitution
And that’s his life
In the mind of a stranger
His life
Taking away more lives
These Monday mornings left in mourning
These Monday mornings left in mourning
