Unknown individuals had tapped the phone of supplier Terentyev and, using the information they had obtained, forced him to arrange a job for the scientist Vedernikov from Moscow at the plant.
At the Odessa port, divers discovered the body of an unknown man and a briefcase containing a large sum of foreign currency. The State Security Committee (KGB) joined the investigation. They quickly identified Gobko, the driver and middleman in the fur scam. His accomplices murdered Gobko in cold blood as soon as they realized he was being watched by the police.
