How to freeze columns in Power BI? With the new version of Power BI desktop, the formatting options for matrix visual have been changed. You can see the changes in recent May 2024 version for Power BI desktop. Hence, the old technique of freezing columns in Power BI does not work for the new version.

In this video, I am going to show you how we can freeze multiple columns or rows in recent version of Power BI. The technique to freeze columns is almost similar with some additional steps to be applied in the formatting options.

There are some changes in formatting options in new version of Power BI. There two key changes. Firstly, the indentation option under row headers is not available anymore. The indentation option has been moved under Layout and preset option. Layout and presets option allows you to change you matrix layout to tabular or compact layout. When we select tabular layout, the matrix is represented in a tabular format. We can turn the 'Repeat Row Headers' option to fill the row. In this way, we can view matrix as a table. We only need to the columns we want to freeze in the rows section of the matrix visual and drill down to the lowest level.

However, we need to perform another step if we wish to change the text weight from bold to normal font. In order to do so, we will need to go to the rows subtotal option and turn on 'per row level' option. If you wish to remove subtotals being displayed on the matrix, you will need to select each row level and disable subtotal by select 'show subtotal' option. To change the font weight from bold to normal, you will need to select row level 'All'. Under the values section, unselect bold. And finally, turn on the option 'Apply to Labels' at the bottom of the values section. This is how you can change the row headers font weight.

The steps should be beginner friendly. Please go through my playlist Power BI tutorials for beginners and Power BI tips and tricks if you wish to view similar tutorial videos which helps you to create awesome tips in Power BI.
