IN REALITY - CHOREOGRAPHY BY BROOKE MORRISON
"In Reality" encompasses the false reality created by social media and how it has constructed ideals and standards unattainable by the average person. This work exhibits the emotions and struggles that we face and asks the question, “how does female body image become distorted, over-sexualized and unrealistic through social media with the influence of the male gaze?” In this project there are eleven dancers involved. There are two worlds created during the live performance; the false reality which is a projected video of all of my dancers behind the true reality of six of my dancers performing live in the space. The piece journeys through three distinct worlds that my question asks of distortion, over-sexualization and realizing how unrealistic and unattainable these body expectations are. It starts with one dancer tied up, signifying the feelings of suffocation and how trapped you can feel from these ideals and standards. Here, the lighting is dim. The journey progresses and ends through overcoming it all, loving and being comfortable in your own skin. As the piece progresses, the lighting begins to build and become brighter, lighting up the space to signify the overcoming and self-acceptance. The performers are all in different costumes, all in the shade of burgundy. While it will not be verbalized by each separately, each dancer is portraying their own story of their own experiences with body image and social media through dancing and scenarios created in the three distinct worlds of in reality.
