The Ketogenic Diet is a high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate diet.
Through the restriction of carbohydrates, it re-programs your metabolism to burn your fat stores for fuel rather than using the glycogen stored in your muscles.
The low-carb intake helps to keep your insulin and blood sugar levels from spiking.
This allows your fat cells to begin releasing fatty acids, which your liver will then breakdown to produce what are called "ketones."
Ketosis is the physiological state that is achieved when your body breaks down ketones for energy rather than the glucose from carbohydrates.

Have you ever heard of the term fat adapted? What does that mean? What is it and why is it important? We're going to be covering all that in today's video. My name is drew Manning from fit to fat to fit. Then if you're interested in learning more about how to live a healthy lifestyle longterm, a head over to fit to fat, to fit.com to check out all of my content, all my programs, I definitely would appreciate that.
um, okay. Today's video fat adapted. What does that mean? Our bodies are amazing tools. We can run off of two different types of fuels, uh, which is so amazing. We could run off of glucose, right? Which comes from carbohydrates or we could run off of ketones, which comes from fats. Our body breaks down fatty acids and the liver convert those fatty acids to ketones. And that's what we use as an alternative fuel source. Being fat adapted in a nutshell means that your body becomes efficient at burning fat for fuel. Now, most of us in the 21st century, we've grown up in a world of abundance where we have access to food all the time. And if you grew up in a first world country, like here in America, you've probably grew up mostly in carbohydrates, right? Cereal for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, pasta for dinner, a roll on the side, toast on the side.
Like that's what we eat. Cause we, we invented this food pyramid thing was the stupidest thing ever, but we lived by it and now we have a huge obesity epidemic. But anyways, I'm getting off track here. Um, so that's the thing is most of us are not fat adapted because we've never really been in a consistent state of ketosis unless you've been doing keto for a long time or you've done fasting for a long time. Our bodies really aren't fat adapted like they used to be back in the day when we were hunters and gatherers. Um, so to be fat adapted now means that we have to, uh, teach our bodies how to burn fat for fuel and become efficient at it. So when people first go keto, they think they're fat adapted on day one, and it's just not true. Your body takes time to adjust and adapt to a new, a new fuel source and a new lifestyle.
So initially you're not going to be fat adapted. What, what, what it means as you become more consistent, uh, living Quito, uh, over the longterm is your body is starting to learn how to use fat as energy. And then what you'll notice is your energy levels go up, your mental clarity goes up. Um, your digestion is better, your energy levels, your focus throughout the day is so much better when you become fat adapted because now your body's becoming efficient at using ketones as an alternative fuel source. That fat adaptation phase usually takes, I'll say on average, two to four weeks for some people, even longer, maybe two months, three months. Um, some people are just so, uh, glucose dependent that their body's going to take time to learn how to use fat as energy. So what are some signs that you're fat adapted? But one of the things I've noticed is my ability to get back in ketosis.
So we already know we're glucose adapted, right? Cause we grew up, you know, here in America, we grew up on carbohydrates, so we're glucose adapted already. Fat adapted. What will happen is now, I've been doing keto for over four years now off and on. My body's ability now to get back into ketosis is a lot quicker than someone who's never been in ketosis. That it's only, you know, mostly living off carbohydrates their whole life. Um, my ability to get back in will be within 24 hours. Other people, uh, it might take three, four, five, six days to get back in. And that's a sign that you're not fat adapted yet. Once you're fat adapted, your body's ability to switch fuel sources quickly or quicker means that you're more fat adapted than, than not. But it's going to take some time. So you gotta be patient with yourself, be patient with your body, do a shirt, keto for a, you know, I would say minimum 30 days to really become fat adapted.
