WORLD AIDS DAY | Twenty years of free care in the DRC
In 2002, Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) opened a treatment centre for people living with HIV in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Offering free care, the outpatient centre was the first of its kind in the city.
Twenty years later, while great progress has been achieved in the country, major gaps remain in testing and treatment for HIV/AIDS, causing thousands of preventable deaths each year.
MSF is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare.
