Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer

In the previous episode, we destroyed a rebel Oscar submarine intending to attack USS Nimitz.

Single Mission 7: Against All Odds

MISSION: Flash traffic // Rising tensions between NATO and Pact forces have caused the USSR to sortie their Kuznetsov carrier with escorts, and 2 of the Akulas are also missing, presumably acting as escorts. Intercept this BG.

Upon arrival, we're doing 10 kt at 150 ft of water. We slowed to 2 kt, started streaming the towed array, and went to periscope depth to download the latest. It is not good.

We're now in a shooting war, and we must bring down the Kuznetsov. Expect 2 Slava cruisers as escorts, plus 2 Akula class subs, plus several Helix helos.

We dove for 560 ft, as we noted the trawler, and schools of shrimp and possibly whales as well.

We did not have too long to wait, as we can hear the Helix's pinging with their 15KHz sonar west of us. We went deep and stayed quiet, and soon we IDed the two Akulas. We fired two torpedoes. One found its mark, the other never locked on to anything. However, 15 minutes later we heard an underwater explosion. We never heard from the other Akula, so we presume she's sunk as well, probably by one of Helix's torpedoes.

Then we got a surface contact. Our first torpedo did find something, but the distance keeps getting further and further... then the torpedo shut down, out of juice. We fired two more, and this time, there's no escape... it's the Kuznetsov! She's been sunk.

So where are the Slava-class cruisers?

We waited, and soon, they appeared on the sonar. Again, we fired two torpedoes, and again, one tracked, the other didn't. The tracked one chased down the cruiser and sunk it. The other one... didn't. It ran out of power.

Yet we checked, there is nothing on sonar. ANYWHERE.

We decided to end the mission by sending in the status report.

We received 700 pts. It's 700 for the Kuznetsov, 100 for each Akula, 50 for each Slava, but -150 x 2 as we've been detected by each Akula in turn. So for a net score of 700.

Checking the log shows that one Akula and one Slava were indeed sunk by the Helix's little 40 cm torpedoes.

We're ready for the next single mission...
