Need tactical help with your SSN vs Multiple diesel-electric subs? Watch me tackle "In the Presence of Wolves" mission as a 688. One-vee-many is not difficult if you handle it right.

We made sure 1 decoy was loaded, changed encounter distance to 20 km (instead of 25) then entered the scenario, immediately go to silent running, and deployed towed array.

(Diesel-electric boats are quiet, and being too far away may mean we fail to detect them at all. The risk of a closer encounter is warranted)

We got a fishing trawler nearby. We checked different depths while unmasking the towed array toward roughly 211, which was the last known bearing of our suspected contact. As the enemy seemed to be closing, we also slowed down.

Whiskey-class SS was detected, but we're expecting more than one, so we waited. And soon, we detected the Juliett-class SS as well.

We decided to go down to 300m, sped up to 3 knots to retrieve the towed array, then back down to 1 kt and turned west, but the Juliett practically overran us... and almost but never detected us.

(You need to be at a certain speed and depth to deploy or retrieve the towed array)

NOTE: In Cold Waters on the NATO side, I prefer to use passive seeker torpedoes (yellow on the tactical map) as to give the enemy minimal warning. Those do not "ping" the target.

As we entered Juliett's baffles, we checked Whiskey's estimated sonar, decided it's safe enough to shoot, then shot one torpedo up Juliett's baffles, while we doglegged another toward the Whiskey's track.

Juliett never heard the torpedo that killed it.

Whiskey executed a hard left turn upon hearing the explosion, but it is confused. It was several minutes later before it heard the other torpedo going for it... AFTER that torpedo had executed the dogleg turn. Whiskey fired two torpedoes down reciprocal bearing, but we were nowhere near there.

Our second torpedo sank the Whiskey. We turned north to give Whiskey's departing shots plenty of room to go by. We disengaged.

There were many different factors discussed, from how to position your submarine, to how to read sensor panels. How to set activation points with torpedo, and how to dogleg. How to conduct baffle attacks and how to consider approach angles to optimize sensors. How to locate enemies...
