The Rehbinder Effect visualised using a cup and water

The #Rehbinder effect is a phenomenon in #physics that reduces the hardness and ductility of a material by a surfactant film. A surfactant is a substance that lowers the surface tension of a liquid, such as water.

When a ceramic cup is submerged in water, the water acts as a surfactant and weakens the bonds between the atoms on the surface of the cup. This makes it easier to pierce the cup with a nail without breaking it.
