---------------
Fear the Spotlight is a tense and atmospheric retro-styled horror adventure that is reminiscent of early Silent Hill games, but without the combat. The story starts with two friends conducting a séance in their school, but its dark secrets drag them into a supernatural mystery. Gameplay involves exploring a house and a school while solving puzzles and occasionally using stealth to sneak around patrolling monsters. It's a surprisingly charming experience that prioritizes vulnerability over visceral scares.
The game itself can be completed in under 4 hours, and is very linear, but well paced, with minimal backtracking and generous save points. The puzzles have a lot of originality, but are all very straightforward, with many solutions heavily signposted. The story itself is good, with a number of twists, but unfortunately, it is largely delivered just through optional notes scattered throughout the school. Thankfully, the game avoids cheap jump scares and manages to use its lighting and sound very well to keep it feeling ominous.
The biggest issue is that the game is pretty basic and can get slightly repetitive. There are only four enemy types, and they all feel the exact same. The stalker monsters often feel unpredictable, and you can just get unlucky, but they are surprisingly forgiving, and you can actually afford to get caught multiple times. The retro style graphics can also be a weakness, and can undermine the horror, with some moments looking more absurd than scary.
Overall, as far as horror games go, it’s surprisingly charming and relatively cosy and casual friendly. It’s not very scary, and it’s not very challenging, but it’s still a pretty solid game. That said, it is a very basic and short game, and a small bit repetitive, so the full asking price is probably too high.
