What If We Become Type I Civilization. In a 1964 article on searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev suggested using radio telescopes to detect energy signals from the other solar systems in which there might be civilizations of three levels of advancement, this became known as the Kardashev Scale. On this scale, Type 1 can harness all of the energy of its home planet, Type 2 can harvest all of the power of its sun, and Type 3 can master the energy from its entire galaxy. Currently, humanity is below a Type 1 civilization, but what if we managed to get there? In this video we are going to find more about a Type 1 civilization and what it would mean for us.
The Kardashev scale was created to assess how advanced a civilization is by taking into consideration multiple factors, including population growth, technology, and energy demands. The idea being that the more advanced the people are, the higher and more complex their energy usage will be. We have come a long way from when our species first appeared on Earth 200,000 years ago. At this time humans were fewer in number, and the extent of our energy source was basically just fire. That being said, we still have a very long way to go to achieve a Type 1 civilization. Based on our energy use, in 1973 astronomer Carl Sagan estimated that Earth represented a Type 0.7 civilization, more current assessments put us at about 0.73. Some estimate, like theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, we might only be anywhere between 100 and 200 years away from graduating to a Type 1.
