UKZN Cybathlon Prosthetic Arm
A UKZN team proudly participated in the “Cybathlon,” a global contest promoting assistive technology innovation, showcasing their “Touch Hand”—a low-cost prosthetic arm designed to help amputees perform everyday household tasks. Supported by the Robotics Association of South Africa and the Swiss Embassy, the team, led by Professor Riaan Stopforth, joined 76 international teams in this “prostheses Olympics,” where the Touch Hand’s robotic sensors enabled precise hand movements based on muscle signals.
The pilot, Lungile Dick, an activist for disability rights, praised the Touch Hand for its user-friendly design. UKZN's participation highlighted the university’s commitment to advancing inclusive, affordable assistive technology on the world stage. The UKZN team came in at number 10 out of 16 teams in the arm prosthetics category in the global competition.
