Thylacine (extinct species)
The thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) is an extinct species of Australian marsupial that was once found across the mainland of Australia before being isolated to Tasmania and eventually driven to extinction.
This haunting footage shows the last remaining specimen known at Hobart Zoo.
It is thought the introduction of dingoes led to their demise on the mainland via increased competition. Once isolated to Tasmania, the arrival of Europeans sealed their fate by unfairly persecuting them as pests. Over 2,000 bounties were paid by the government between 1888 to 1909 to eradicate the species. They were declared extinct by 1936.
The introduction of feral dogs, habitat loss, population fragmentation and disease are also thought to be contributing factors to the animals’ extinction.
As the footage reveals the zoo conditions were poor and said to be run by incompetents. With minimal stimulation and very little protection from the elements the thylacine were very poorly looked after.
It was only after the thylacine disappeared that Tasmanians began to understand what they had lost. Today images of the thylacine can be seen on many official governmental images and logos. It is a constant reminder of the importance of preserving species and maintaining rigorous conservation efforts.
