League veteran “Stefcon 1” describes the Derby Dolls as a “labor of love,” where everyone plays their part. Merch, as WhoreChata puts it, plays a leading role. “We rely on the sale of our merch and our tickets to quite literally keep the lights on, so it's important for us to have our designs on quality tees that people really want to wear.” Not to mention, merch that can handle years of 60-minute bouts on the bank track chock-full of pulling, crashing, sliding and literal blood, sweat and tears.
But selling tees and hoodies is not all about the money for the Derby Dolls. Rather, it serves as a way to bring people together — fellow skaters, fans, and a community of people from all walks of life looking for a place to belong, or test their competitive spirit.
With no major sponsors or television coverage, and limited resources, the Derby Dolls represent the raw power of community. It’s what has kept athletes like Stefcon 1 in the game for over 17 years. “Seeing everyone work together to keep this sport alive and make it the best they can motivates me and keeps me coming back. I want to introduce the sport to other people so they can fall in love with it, too. That’s up to us, so I’ll keep playing till the wheels fall off.”
