While the automotive landscape of the 1970s overflows with iconic concept cars, the 1971 Matra Laser often finds itself overlooked. Yet, this singular creation by design maestro Giovanni Michelotti holds a unique place in history, showcasing a bold and beautiful interpretation of the mid-engined sports car formula.
Matra, a French manufacturer initially known for its prowess in aerospace and weaponry, took an unexpected turn in 1968. They entered the high-octane world of Formula 1, culminating in a triumphant 1969 season. The Matra-Ford team secured the coveted Constructors' Championship, with Jackie Stewart firmly behind the wheel as Drivers' Champion. This motorsport success coincided with Matra's foray into road-going sports cars, following the acquisition of Automobiles René Bonnet.
The 1967 M530 marked Matra's debut in the sports car arena. Its name echoed the company's R530 surface-to-air missile, hinting at the technological prowess they intended to translate to the road. Now I will say this thing is not goodlooking in anyway. Thankfully In 1970, this capable mid-engined car received a tasteful facelift courtesy of the renowned designer Giovanni Michelotti.
