The Oregon Donkey Sanctuary is a refuge for orphaned and formerly abused donkeys.
Founded by Rhonda and Jim Urquhart, @oregondonkeysanctuary is currently home to over 20 donkeys. Many of them have disabilities or require lifelong care due to past mistreatment. The nonprofit received the Oregon Humane Society's Diamond Collar Award in 2023.
Along with caring for these gentle animals, the Oregon Donkey Sanctuary also provides a hands-on experience they like to call “donkey assisted” activity. This includes inviting groups of elders, children and people with disabilities to come to the sanctuary and interact with its equine residents. According to Jim Urquhart, these close-up interactions can enchant and calm anxious or timid visitors.
