🌱 Something strange growing in an Oregon farmer's greenhouse...💀
Derek Powazek of @milkbarnfarm in Boring, Oregon has been nurturing a corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) for the past 13 years. It finally bloomed on July 23. He believes it's the first time one has flowered in Oregon.
This special plant is native to the tropics of Sumatra, Indonesia, and can grow to be taller than a person. The corpse flower earns its name from the foul aroma of its flowers, which smells like rotting garbage and decaying flesh. The odor, while nasty to us humans, attracts pollinators that are crucial for the plant to reproduce.
The bloom of this corpse flower lasted for only a day. It will likely be years before the plant flowers again.
