Changing Gmail view, even if only temporarily, will really help during the Inbox clearing process, especially if you have a lot of old emails to get rid of.

How to Do It:
1. Select the Settings cog wheel in the top right hand corner. Choose the Compact view. This changes the vertical row height so you see more emails per page.
2. Select See All Settings.
3. In the first General settings tab, change the Maximum page size to 100 conversations per page.
4. Scroll down further to the Conversation View section and check that option is turned ON.
5. Then switch to the Settings tab called Inbox.
6. Turn on the 4 Inbox tabs called Social Promotions Updates and Forums.
7. Scroll down to Impotance Markers and select these to Show.
8. Save all your changes.

All these adjustments to your Inbox view will then be applied. Conversation view and the denser display, with more messages showing per page will help find batches of messages you are ready to Archive out of Inbox.

Gmail will have automatically sorted what it believes are less critical messages off the Primary Inbox tab into Categories: Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums.

Starting your Inbox clearing with the messages in these 4 Tabs, before you then move to what's left on the Primary Tab. Here, Conversation view and Importance markers will help you too.
