Sacrificial (Basement Theme) - The Binding of Isaac on Piano
My piano reduction/arrangement of Sacrificial (the basement theme) from The Binding of Isaac soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky.
The Binding of Isaac is a wonderful action-adventure game developed by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl. The game deals with themes of child abuse, imagination, and religion, portrayed with the blackest of humor and a surprising dash of poignancy. I would highly recommend it, at least if you have a taste for black humor.
Sacrificial is an excellent track. Unfortunately for me, a big part of what makes the track successful is the ingenious percussion and musical texture, especially in the loud section in the middle. I can't imitate dense percussion and distorted guitars on a piano (obviously), so I decided to go with my own thing there and arrange a section with lots of bombastic octaves in the treble and bass, filling in the mid-range texture with quieter moving intervals and simple countermelodies. The idea is for the unilateral loudness and technical difficulty in that section to suggest a sort of a "break from sanity," in keeping with the themes of the game. I like how it turned out, but as for whether or not it captured the feel of the original piece, well I guess that's for you to decide.
