Donkey Kong Bananza is a A 3D platform video game exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, released on July 17, 2025. It is only the second 3D Donkey Kong sequel after Donkey Kong 64 in 1999. Part of the Super Mario Odyssey team, consisting of relatively young developers and Donkey Kong fans, was involved in its development. Development began immediately after Mario Odyssey for the first Switch, but was postponed to the Switch 2 in 2021 due to technical limitations that jeopardized the game's vision.
The story begins on the island of Ingot Isle, where Donkey Kong, while collecting rare Banandium gems, is ambushed by the sinister Void Company, which steals his treasures. Led by Void Kong, Grumpy Kong and Poppy Kong assist him. After a violent storm, Donkey Kong falls into an underground cave system, where he encounters the musically gifted girl Pauline. Yes, Pauline – but rejuvenated to 13 years old. Together, the two embark on a journey toward the planet's core, a legendary place where wishes supposedly come true, in pursuit of the Void Company. They traverse diverse terrain: lush lagoons, vast canyons, icy tundra, and more – every level of the world is full of secrets and surprises. In all these layers live inhabitants who suffer under the influence of the Void Company and urgently need support. Golden treasures are waiting to be discovered everywhere – especially the valuable Banandium Jewels. These delicious gems grant skill points that can be used to boost Donkey Kong's health, increase his punching power, and unlock new abilities. Banandium Jewels are plentiful, so it's worth exploring every nook and cranny, destroying obstacles, and taking on challenges to retrieve as many of these treasures as possible.
The game features a destructible, voxel-like world in which Donkey's raw power takes center stage. Players can tear down environments, uncover new paths, and actively influence the landscape. Additionally, special fossils can be found that unlock new outfits for Donkey Kong and Pauline. These are not only visually appealing but also provide gameplay advantages such as increased speed or improved durability.
Banana chips are another currency that can be used to purchase all sorts of everyday items.
Through the Bananzas – mysterious, ancestral powers from the depths of the underworld – Pauline's singing grants Donkey Kong the power to transform into various animal forms. However, these transformations are time-limited, so their use should be carefully considered. To maintain the so-called Bananergy, collecting gold is crucial. Examples of transformations include: Kong-Bananza, which makes him even stronger and allows him to shatter even the hardest stone; Zebra Bananza, which grants him tremendous speed and allows him to run over water or brittle paths; or Ostrich Bananza, with which he can fly and throw egg bombs.
In co-op mode, a second player takes control of Pauline, who can use her voice to unleash special musical abilities. Together, the two can unleash powerful combos. For newcomers, there's a support mode that offers, among other things, target markers and reduced damage.
A creative addition is the "DK Artist" mode, in which players can create their own small works of art – similar to a simple construction kit or painting program. The game will also be amiibo-compatible: A separately available Donkey Kong & Pauline amiibo unlocks exclusive looks.
