Lyddington Bede House

Lyddington is a picturesque village and was home to a palace for the Bishops of Lincoln. However the history books are vague on what was originally here with a possibility that the site dates back to the 12th century.
Lyddington Bede House we see today was once a wing of the medieval palace, an estate that included fish ponds and a deer park. In 1600 it became an almshouse for 12 poor men, 2 women and a warden.
In 1976 archaeological work was one on the site which uncovered evidence to show the building was actually the cross wing of a very large 14th century hall.
The great chamber was a place which would have been inspiring to anyone who visited a prince of the church. From the beautifully carved designed cornice to the walls that would have been richly decorated with tapestries.
The bedesmen rooms are a series of living areas divided by oak stud walling that would have been originally plastered. It's hard to believe that these rooms were in use for over 300 years.
Today we can see a reconstruction of one of these rooms, they would have provided excellent accommodation compared to the usual standards of the time.
The first mention of a church at Lyddington was in 1163, but the oldest parts of the present church dates from the 14th century, these being the chancel and west tower. William I created the Diocese of Lincoln. The bishop of the time required other residences, Lyddington was chosen as such a location.
Today we have a memory of the past, steeped in history from it's palatial beginnings to a time when care and understanding were in much greater need. So why not pay a visit to the picturesque and beautiful Lyddington Bede House.
