In 1917, King George V changed the royal family’s name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor due to anti-German sentiment. This change later affected Lord Mountbatten and Prince Philip, who adopted the name Mountbatten-Windsor. Despite Philip's preference for his surname, Queen Elizabeth II maintained Windsor as the family name for the monarchy, balancing tradition with modern identity.
