In this video, I explore a critical shift in my perspective as a financial advisor regarding when to take your Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Traditionally, I've advised my clients to wait until age 70 to maximize their benefits. However, after revisiting the data and factoring in healthspan—the years you can live in good health—I've come to realize that this advice may not be ideal for everyone. Many Canadians may not live long enough to fully benefit from delaying their CPP, and even if they do, their quality of life could be compromised by health issues in their later years.

I take a closer look at the difference between lifespan and healthspan, and how this impacts retirement planning. While many Canadians are living longer, the years spent in good health are often significantly shorter than the total years of life. According to Statistics Canada, the average Canadian can expect to live only until around age 70 in good health, meaning the last 12 or more years could be spent dealing with serious health problems. This brings up an important question: Is it truly worth delaying your CPP if your best years are already behind you?

Ultimately, this video challenges the conventional wisdom of waiting until 70 to collect CPP. Through the use of calculators and data analysis, I demonstrate that taking your benefits earlier—at 60 or 65—may allow you to enjoy your retirement more fully while you're still active and healthy. Retirement isn't just about maximizing dollars; it's about maximizing life. This fresh approach ensures that your financial strategy is aligned with your healthspan, helping you make the most of your golden years.
