Creek on Landfill
The old Trethewey Dump operated from about 1929 to about 1950. It received the wastes of York Township in suburban Toronto, Canada. In 1950 it was completed and turned into Coronation Park. In the thickets at the west end of the park a small creek drains the old dump toward Black Creek. Trees struggle to find a footing for their roots in the loose and acidic dump materials. Ashes, bricks, metal, ceramics, glass are quite apparent in the fill. Nylon stockings from the late 1940s survive recognizably in the dump, remdining us that plastics are long-lasting materials.
