MJFF Virtual Cinema: HYAM PLUTZIK, AMERICAN POET [FULL MOVIE]
This captivating film traces Hyam Plutzik’s growth as a poet from his youthful days on a Connecticut farm as the son of Russian Jewish emigrants, through his education at Trinity College and Yale, and finally as the first Jewish professor at the University of Rochester and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize nomination. HYAM PLUTZIK: AMERICAN POET revives the work of this forgotten Jewish writer who still remains a mystery, juxtaposing memory, interviews, literature, and home movies to lead viewers on a journey through the life and legacy of a modernist whose voice resounds powerfully within the best formal and elegiac traditions of Theodore Roethke and Wallace Stevens. The film is co-directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Christine Choy and features some of the most important poets of the 20th-century, including Hayden Carruth, Gallway Kinnell, Donald Hall, Grace Schulman, and Stanley Kunitz in his last interview at age 99.
