As of October 16, 2024, a new journal was published regarding the division of king cobra species into four species:
Ophiophagus hannah = Northern king cobra
Ophiophagus bungarus = Sunda king cobra
Ophiophagus salvatana = Luzon king cobra
Ophiophagus kaalinga = Western Ghats king cobra
