Where does a plastic bag come from? Plastic bags are made from polyethylene, which begins as ethylene extracted from natural gas or oil. It is specially treated to become a polymer. Polyethylene is changed to fit how it will be used and the different types of bags to be produced. Seeing its potential, it was initially used in secret by the British military during World War II. 1965 – The one-piece polyethylene shopping bag is patented by the Swedish company Celloplast. Designed by engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin, the plastic bag quickly begins to replace cloth and plastic in Europe. Plastics are made from natural materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil through a polymerisation or polycondensation process. Where are plastic bags made? Plastic bags are manufactured all over the world, but most locations are in the United States, Australia, and Germany. Since the manufacturing process has many steps and requires industrial equipment, most facilities are rather large. Most of the manufacturing for plastic bags is automated. In 1982, two of the largest grocery store chains in the country, Safeway and Kroger, began offering single-use plastic bags to their customers.
