Livestream of the first American asteroid sample return from NASA's OSIRIS-REx!
Broadcasting live from the Utah desert at the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground we bring to you the incoming sample return! NASA's OSIRIS-REx launched in September 2016 to the asteroid named Bennu. Bennu is a Near-Earth Asteroid, meaning the orbit of the asteroid intersects the orbit with Earth. Bennu was selected for many reasons as the target of the OSIRIS-REx mission, such as its orbit, and the fact that it is primitive, carbonaceous material. OSIRIS-REx arrived at asteroid Bennu in December 2018 and took many images and mapped the surface to find a location to grab an asteroid sample. In October 2020, the mission successfully used the "Touch and Go Sample Aquisition Mechanism", also known as TAGSAM, to collect over 60-grams of asteroid sample inside the Sample Return Capsule. In May 2021, OSIRS-REx fired up the main thrusters to head back home, to Earth! Since then, we have been patiently waiting for the first American asteroid sample to be returned on September 24, 2023.
