"Why Can't We (No It Couldn't)" composed and performed by Matteo Sohn
Performed on October 30, 2024 at the Scarsdale High School Music Tower
Inspired by A. Scriabin, this short piano piece explores themes of devestation and destruction. The story of the piece's origin is rather petty, as the story is centered around my first breakup. When it happened, I was filled with a mix of sadness, anger, confusion, regret, and nostalgia. As these emotions began to overshadow my life, I translated these thoughts into an overly dramatic and passionate composition. In my opinion, music is fundamentally about extremes and exaggeration. These extremes are often applied to technical things like dynamics and harmony, but are equally important when deriving the poetic expression of the music as a whole.
Bonus note-Since this is my first time performing the piece, I made tons of mistakes. However, you could argue that the mistakes are "poetically accurate" ;)
