In the 1980s in Latin America, copyright was, let's say, a somewhat vague concept. And the advertising industry knew it.
You didn't need huge budgets or expensive licenses. Just a famous radio hit, a slight change in the lyrics, maybe a couple of tweaked musical notes, and voilà: the jingle was ready. Sometimes it worked brilliantly. Other times, it was so obvious you couldn't help but sing the product to the tune of the original hit.
There was ingenuity, that's for sure. And a keen business sense. The creative minds of that era adapted popular songs to sell everything from drinks to appliances, taking advantage of the fact that nobody was paying much attention. Today it would be impossible to do that without getting caught the next day, but back then, the lack of oversight was also a form of unregulated creativity.
I'm Frognum, and I invite you to remember 5 songs turned into advertising jingles. Those anthems you hummed without realizing that behind them was a rock anthem, a ballad, or a disco track transformed into a commercial.
Let me know in the comments if you remember any other similar cases or if you ever discovered the original song years later and it all made sense.
