I am a big fan of Lenovo / IBM Thinkpads, however they tend to be a bit on the loud side when it comes to fan noise. With TPFanControl you can create what is essentially a custom fan curve for your Thinkpad. With the right configuration, you can make your Thinkpad almost silent.
Something I did not mention: Another use for TPFanControl is to increase your laptop's fan speeds if you find that it is getting too hot (if that is the case you should consider replacing your thermal paste first though).
