For the past four years, researchers at the Tennessee Valley Extension and Research Center, in conjunction with HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, have been studying the viability of growing barley in the state. They're testing different varieties to discover which ones provide the highest yield potential and disease resistance. All this work could mean Alabama farmers have another crop option, and craft beer enthusiasts may be able to enjoy 100% Alabama-grown beers in the near future.
